Phonar: A life in the day of Final Piece

For my final piece I decided to create a blog since my audience will predominately be young people looking at peoples stories on the same situation. Despite this my audience could be a vast variety of ages as these people may just want to educate themselves on the other peoples opinions and lifestyles before passing judgment.

This Final piece does not contain a Flickr account of any kind since i felt this did not aid any story telling or representation to my narrative of showing the positive side of young parenting.

To start with I decided to create a Facebook group to also engage and connect to the vast community since most of the characters likely to be involved within the project would be on this media type. However upon first searching on existing groups i found a small collective of people briefly discussing the matter. This prompted me to create a group to make it unique to the narrative. However upon another search another creating the group I found a larger community group with more people posting on its ‘Wall’. Why fix something that is not broke? Therefore I connected this group to my blog home page and posted a link to the blog, explaining the project and seeing if people would be interested in participating.

Furthermore I created a Soundcloud group to implement any of those people that can not put their stories or opinions into words. Also this would make the piece more diverse since the sound could be pieced together with images later on, imported into other blog posts and further media types.

To satisfy the narrative side of things my Friend Sara was able to share her experiences, opinions of her and others as well as an insight into her decisions when it comes to young parenting. Having a Two, almost 3 year old, Sara has had plenty of experience with dealing with other peoples opinions on the matter as well as what she has been through herself. Below is the piece I created ‘Sara and Liam’. To improve on the piece I could improve the sound quality by leveling out the volume, however some of these glitches were caused by Liam moving the microphone as well as me pushing buttons to drown out what i thought were distracting background noises since the sound level on the device were spiking.

One way to carry on with this project is to create meeting groups of all different genres, ages, religions and beliefs of people and set about recording this to feature a long side the blog as well as feature within the Soundcloud group.

Phonar: Visiting Jon Levy and Foto8

Showing Jon levy my work. One thing he mentioned was that i should not be as literal in my work as well as saying they only seem ‘to be adding one thing’. Also Levy noted that the images and format of my work seemed as ‘book ends’ on either end panel image with having two ends and then an object in the middle. He suggests I should make the triptych seem like one even though there are three parts to them. Another suggest was to explore the freedom of the item, thing, portrait or subject i was taking and use the other two frames to show the emotional or physical side mean while not making all of them too literal. Levy then showed me an example of the work by Jodi Bieber in one of Ei8ht’s magazines. With this example he was saying that I have to remember that I am not wedded to one rule, then they become one, with Biebers work he was saying that if one of the images changed in the set then it would really be noticed where as if one of mine would to change the angle the person was shot at it would still signify the subject matter/person. Again in the example he was saying I could use other objects not belonging to the person, but still carrying the same significance to the related story. For example, the image of a woman wanting to throw herself onto the tracks. They were not her tracks but including the picture still made a big impact on the image by telling the narrative of these are the tracks in which she wants to commit the deed.

To improve on my formatting for the more panoramic triptychs, Levy mentioned I could take out the frames in between the images they would still have an edge where they don’t meet up, but would still be saying it’s one picture that is three parts and it is a panorama but not a panorama. Furthermore, Levy questioned the shooting method of film and then responded by saying that he saw a guy do a project of panoramics by using the whole film roll to capture, say a bridge, consecutively frame by frame rather than pulling images from the 3rd and 7th frame to stitch together.

One thing Jon Levy did like about one of my triptychs was the ability to make the audience work harder to what they are seeing. This was in the triptych of John (fig 1) from my PICBOD final Images. The ability to make the audience work harder was brought by the feeling of the concrete and metal shown in the objects featured within.

Overall Levy was getting across that I have one picture but three takes at it each time, so to progress from this step I need to break it into the emotional and physical sides of things as well as giving the images more feeling by not beeing as literal. Meaning taking pictures of straight colours and adding that into one of the sections to give it something extra. Coming back to Biebers section in the magazine, Levy concluded that in the work there are different stories about the woman and within each set there was something photographed not at the same time, not belonging to the subject.

Taking into account Jon Levy’s words, I decided to re make some triptychs based on the photo session I did with Jemma, seeing as this was one the pieces of work I decided to show Jon. Here is the result:

Phonar: Task 1

For this task we had to find a portfolio of 8-10 images from various artists.

Here are the images I collected:

(L->R: Adde Adesokan, Theo Guichheron, Ross Rawlings, Elinor Carucci, David Hilliard, Carrie LevyDavid Hilliard, Marjolane Ryley)

The images above comprise of triptychs I have found during the summer that I thought may help inspire me for the upcoming Phonar Module, as well as images that helped me with my Narrative work from the previous year. These triptych images helped with seeing how other people created a narrative by using three images to make a single piece.
